list of all known U.S. Army troop transport ships, or ships procured through requisitions
or confiscation, created by the North Carolina Historical Commission just after World

ships' names are organized alphabetically under the category headings. There are also
listings of foreign ships confiscated by the U.S. government and transformed into
troop transports, as well as listings of all of the ships used by the Army to help
transport American and British troops across the English Channel to France.

Acquisitions Information
The collection was formerly part of the Robert B. House Collection, World War I Papers, 1903-1933 (presently, WWI 82 Robert B. House Collection). It was removed from that collection as the significance of the materials warranted being in their own collection. This collection created by the North Carolina Historical Commission (subsequently the State Archives of North Carolina) between 1918 and 1921. The North Carolina's War Records Collector Robert B. House attempted to collect, compile, and document as many North Carolina WWI service individuals as possible. House and his staff collected information from various federal offices-including the War Department-regarding operations that affected North Carolina servicemen. This included lists of units, war medal winners, and relevant military facts from the war. This included the list of U.S. Army troop transport ships used during WWI. As this collection was compiled from public records by the North Carolina Historical Commission, there was never a need for the collection to be accessioned in the Historical Commission's holdings, or for a contract of gift to be signed for donation of the list to the Historical Commission. All of the materials in this collection were acquired, collected, or created as part of the North Carolina Historical Commission's on-going World War historic materials collection project, which was authorized by Sections 3 and 4 of Chapter 144 of the North Carolina Public Laws and Resolutions in 1919.
Processing Information
This collection was reprocessed in 2018 to better reflect the original intent of the records' creators. Robert B. House left his position as North Carolina War Records Collector in 1921, and deposited his college, military, and War Collectors materials as an archival collection at the State Archives. House's materials included typescripts of information, military unit lists, and military awards lists, that House never finished adding to the WWI Papers before he left his War Records Collector position. It was determined that placing the U.S. Army Troop Transport Ships List in its own collection matched the original intentions of House, and that the materials would be more discoverable by researchers if they were removed from the House Collection. The original House collection is now entitled Robert B. House Collection, and is numbered "WWI 82" in the WWI Papers.
This collection was organized in an acid-free archival file folder, with ships list organized on numbered pages in alphabetical order by the name of the ship under headings defining and dividing the type or purpose of the ship.
