Collection Overview

This collection is a series of materials collected by the North Carolina World War II war records project from locations or publications outside of North Carolina during World War II. A Collector of War Records was appointed in October 1942 to coordinate the state's efforts in collecting and preserving the records pertaining to North Carolina and its citizens, and their part in World War II for the North Carolina Department of Archives and History. As a result of the efforts of county collectors of war records, there were sixty-eight counties represented in this collection. Most of the other records were collected by civic clubs, patriotic societies, churches, army camps, offices of civilian defense, and newspaper editors. These out-of-state materials were a small set of items that did not fit within any other collection or series of the original WWII-era collections of the WWII Papers of the Military Collection. They were arranged in this collection in the early 1960s when the State Archives arranged and described all of the WWII Papers collections.
