Acquisitions Information

The collection was donated to the Military Collection at the State Archives of North Carolina by Jo Anne Williford of the North Carolina Division of Archives and History and the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association, sometime after the September 1995 event. Williford was a member of the symposium's program committee. There is no contract of gift for these materials, as they were created as departmental records for the North Carolina Division of Archives and History as a department-sponsored event.

Processing Information

The collection was originally stored in Maxwell audiocassette tape cases in a small shipping box, as they had been sent from whomever was responsible for keeping the master recordings of the symposium sessions. All of the cassette tapes are the master versions of the symposium session recordings. Tapes 7 and 8, which contained the September 22 late afternoon session entitled "The Impact of World War II on African Americans," for some unknown reason was not retained with the rest of the recordings in the collection when donated to the State Archives of North Carolina. It is unknown if another copy of the session exists in a public archival repository. An original event program kept with the recordings was stored in an archival, acid-free folder in the box with the audiocassette tapes.

Parts of multiple sessions were recorded on the same audiocassette tapes, as they were 60-minute tapes and not long enough to cover the entire one and a half hour sessions. Copies of the recordings were retained by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as were videos of the event. These copies' status are not at present known.
