War in Afghanistan Papers, WAFG

The War in Afghanistan Papers is composed of original archival materials documenting the United States military's involvement in fighting against the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. The papers also document the occupation and military operations of the U.S. in Afghanistan during the period from 2001 to 2014. This war period records group contains materials donated from the public since 2002 to the State Archives of North Carolina. The War in Afghanistan Papers is part of the Military Collection at the State Archives of North Carolina.

The War in Afghanistan was begun following the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, in the United States. The war was against those the U.S. held responsible for the attacks, al-Qaeda, and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan that was offering al-Qaeda sanctuary in the country. The war was codenamed Operation Enduring Freedom. The U.S. was initially supported by the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia; and, later by a coalition of over 40 countries, including all NATO members. The war's public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power. These objectives were largely met in 2001, with the remaining war involving the fight against Taliban insurgents against the rebuilt Afghan government and U.S. military. On December 28, 2014, official combat operations related to this war were declared by NATO as formally ended in Afghanistan and officially transferred full security responsibility to the Afghan government. The War in Afghanistan is the longest war in U.S. history.
