Collection Overview

The Albert Barden Photograph Collection consists of over 18,000 individual negatives created by Albert Barden (21 October 1888-2 October 1953), a commercial photographer in Raleigh, NC, between 1908 and 1953. The collection consists of three series that do not correspond to any subject matter, date or otherwise. Groupings of similarly themed photographs do exist within the collection, but they tend not to aid organization in any measurable way. The subject matter in this collection is widely varied including, studio portraiture, advertisements, events, editorial work, funerals, infrastructure documentation (especially Raleigh, NC), insurance documentation, etcetera. The work is typical of what you would see in an early commercial photography studio. Specifically, this collection contains a wealth of photographs depicting Raleigh, NC street scenes, municipal buildings, residential homes and neighborhoods, landmarks and other subject matter of local interest.

Arrangement Note

The Albert Barden Photograph Collection is not arranged in any particular order, but does contain three series. The collection was donated to the North Carolina Museum of History upon Albert Barden's death in 1953. The call numbers assigned to the items in the collection bear this date and it is likely the numbers were assigned when the collection was accessioned. Because of the size and scope of the collection, it was not practical to perform arrangement in any formal way. It is presumed that Barden had the files arranged topically, which would explain why there are groups of photographs containing similar subject matter. However, these groupings tend not to aid in research or the overall organization of the collection. The reason for assigning separate series is unknown.

Biographical/Historical

Albert Barden was born in Tunbridge Wells, England on 21 October 1888 to Charles H. Barden and Emily Sophia Barden. His father, Charles H. (1861-1948), was born in London and also worked as a photographer.
Individual and group portraits of the Barden family found within the collection suggest a mutual fondness between siblings and other family members. Attempts were made to reach out to Albert Barden's niece, Emily Mae Barden in January 2017, but were unsuccessful. The Barden family, consisting of Charles H., Emily and their children; Albert, Charles, Arthur, Hugh, George, Daisy and Violet immigrated to the United States in 1907. They arrived in Philadelphia and by 1908 the family had settled in Raleigh, NC. Charles H. and his son Albert were both employed at Wharton & Tyree Studio; Charles H. as a re-toucher and Albert as a printer. Many of Albert Barden's negatives, especially his portraits, are expertly retouched, suggesting he likely learned the craft at a young age from his father.
By 1910 Barden's father Charles' occupation is listed in the Raleigh City Directory as a "Re-toucher-Portraitist", while Albert had worked his way to manager of Ellington's Studio-a position he would hold for the next 15 years. In 1925 he is listed in the Raleigh City Directory as the proprietor of Ellington's Studio and by 1927 he was operating the same studio at 120 1/2 Fayetteville Street under his own name.
During his life, Barden took a very active role in civic and cultural matters. His accomplishments include, founding member of the Raleigh Chess Club, Vice President of the Lions Club, member of the United States Third Regiment band and member of the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra. During WWII, Barden volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol completing a tour of duty along the coast of North Carolina. Barden continued work as a commercial photographer until his death in 1953.
