Collection Overview
The collection consists of 64 photographic prints and negatives primarily of composite pictures of the North Carolina General Assembly from 1935 to 1961. The group also contains photos of members of the North Carolina Supreme Court, Wake Forest College Senior Class of 1909, an unidentified Sunday School Class of children, July, 1904, interior views of the House Chamber (1941) and the Senate Chamber (1943), and an exterior view of the State Capitol at night (undated). The composite prints are examples of the firm's work that it provided for the legislators. Most of the negatives are flexible film, but a few are of the glass plate variety.
Arrangement Note
The collection is arranged chronologically and by topic. The General Assembly photos have been organized by the Senate and the House. The prints and the negatives have been placed in separate boxes. The prints are arranged by size (smallest to largest).
Biographical/Historical note
Siddell Studio was owned and operated from c.1916 through the 1940's on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, NC, by Henry A. Siddell, who was born in Indiana c.1882. Siddell Studio was one of the largest photography studios in the state of North Carolina by the 1930's, producing individual and group portraits, other traditional studio photography work, photography for school yearbooks, official photography for the North Carolina General Assembly and other government entities, as well as a wide variety of picture postcards. Henry A. Siddell also operated a studio in St. Petersburg, FL, by the late 1930's. Siddell was married to Hallie Simkins Siddell (1896-1977), also a photographer, associated with the Foto Shop on Fayetteville Street as well as Siddell Studio.
