Papers of Mrs. Cornelia Spencer, historian and writer from Chapel Hill, daughter of Prof. James Phillips. Most of the letters relate to UNC and life in Chapel Hill, 1859-1895, including correspondence with university presidents David L. Swain, Kemp P. Battle, and George T. Winston, as well as Mrs. Swain and W. C. Kerr, about the administration of President Solomon Pool, the legislative battle and reopening of the university in 1875, efforts to preserve the collection of botanist Moses A. Curtis, raising money for scientific equipment, and the university centennial of 1895. Much correspondence relates to Mrs. Spencer's published works, including her history of the last days of the Civil War in North Carolina and biographies of university professors and alumni. Topics also include the lack of public schools (1870), the Bingham School, Davidson College, W. C. Kerr's geological survey of the state and his visit to the Vienna Exhibition, the North Carolina Agricultural Society, the reestablishment of the North Carolina Historical Society (1875), and the funding of a home for aged and destitute women. There are also letters and a manuscript article on the Henry Laurens family of South Carolina. Of particular interest are letters (1869-1881) from Gov. Zebulon B. Vance concerning both his political and personal life; Governors William A. Graham and Henry T. Clark on the university and politics; Lyman C. Draper on the successful historical society (1877); and W. H. S. Burgwyn at Harvard Law School on Solomon Pool, Boston society, and General U. S. Grant. Other correspondents include Louis Agassiz, Thomas S. Ashe, William H. Battle, Asa Gray, Edward J. Hale, Francis Strother Lyon, Bartholomew F. Moore, William L. Saunders, Hannis Taylor, Josiah Turner, Alfred M. Waddell. Other papers of Mrs. Spencer are in the Southern Historical Collection, UNC.
