Collection Overview
Papers of Hoke, Confederate general and operator of ironworks in Lincoln, Orange, and Mitchell counties, including letter (1852) to Hoke at school in Kentucky; photocopies of letters concerning death of Col. Isaac E. Avery (1863); reports on troop movements (1865); and Hoke's printed farewell address to his division. An order book (1864) has Hoke's suggestions for defense of Petersburg (June 17, 1864) and letters relating to courts-martial. Three additional order books (1865) concern furloughs, special orders, and number of duty- efficient men. Postwar items include material on Cranberry Ironworks in Mitchell Co. and a railroad to be built into Tennessee (1866-1868); personal letters from Jefferson and Varina Davis and from Hoke's sister, mother of Hoke Smith, in Texas (1886); reminiscences of battles at Ft. Fisher, Bentonville, and Plymouth; an anecdote about Governor Vance in last days of war; and photographs of Jefferson Davis, P. G. T. Beauregard, and Hoke. Subject files include Chapel Hill Iron Mountain Railroad Co. (later the State University Rail Road Co.), Civil War (assaults on Petersburg, 1864; Junior Reserves near Kinston; Confederate veterans magazine, 1898); Lincoln Lithia Springs; and the S. S. Robert S. Hoke. Also included is Jamestown Exposition Edition, News and Observer (Raleigh), 1907, describing North Carolina exhibits on fire and life insurance, tobacco, cotton, furniture, lumber, nurseries, and the town of Pinehurst. Additional correspondents are P. G. T. Beauregard, Jubal A. Early, Joseph A. Johnston, J. G. de R. Hamilton, Wade Hampton, and Fred A. Olds. Other R. F. Hoke papers are in the Southern Historical Collection.
