Abstract

John Burney McGowan (1941-2009) was an historian and researcher interested in Hyde County genealogy and history. He extensively documented his own family, the McGowan family, as well as many other eastern North Carolina families. The John B. McGowan Collection, 1990-2009, contains reproductions of census records, family trees, birth and death records, military records, images, and other genealogical data largely related to the McGowan family, as well as historical information about Hyde County.

Collection Overview

The John B. McGowan Collection, 1990-2009, contains reproductions of census records, family trees, birth and death records, military records, images, and other genealogical data largely related to the McGowan family, as well as historical information about Hyde County.

Biographical/Historical

John Burney McGowan was born in Hyde County in 1941. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in history and a passion for genealogy. During his lifetime he pursued his interest in collecting information on Hyde County and eastern North Carolina, their ancestral histories, and his McGowan family roots. He was active in the Hyde County Historical and Genealogical Society and served as webmaster for the group. McGowan died in 2009 and is buried in the family plot at Soule Cemetery in Swan Quarter, North Carolina.
