Helen, several of her brothers, and various nephews and nieces. There are a number

hitch hiking trip, as well as numerous letters from him during his military service
in the Marine Corps during World War II. Additionally, the collection includes Maud's

                     Collection Overview

The Maud Hayes Stick Papers, circa 1880s-1972 and undated, consists of correspondence,
personal papers, and photographs. Much of the correspondence comes from Maud's family,
including her husband, artist Frank Stick, as well as her mother Charlotte, her sister
Helen, several of her brothers, and various nephews and nieces. There are a number
of letters from her son David Stick, including early letters from his 1938 cross-country
hitch-hiking trip, as well as numerous letters from him during his military service
in the Marine Corps during World War II.
In addition to correspondence, the collection includes several folders containing
Maud's personal papers, including a travel diary kept during her 1954 trip to Europe,
war ration books used by Maud and Frank, ephemera (membership cards, programs, invitations,
                        etc.), clippings, and other papers.
The Photographs series contains photographic prints, negatives, slides, and tintypes,
primarily depicting members of the Stick family and their friends. One folder labeled
"Miscellaneous Subjects - Not Identified, circa 1907-1915" contains numerous photographs
of members of an unidentified indigenous group. Several folders contain photographs
of local men fishing with spears and goggles, which David Stick refers to as goggle
fishing. Included in these photographs are some of the earliest images depicting surfing
on the Outer Banks; the men appear to have paddled out on surfboards to fish. Also
included are numerous photographs taken in Jamaica and Peleliu during David Stick's
World War II service, as well as some snapshots taken after major events on the Outer
Banks, such as shipwrecks, storms, and plane crashes. Most of the photographs from
the 1940s forward appear to have been taken by David Stick. Folder titles and dates
                        were supplied by David Stick.

                   Arrangement Note

This collection is arranged into three series: Correspondence, Personal Papers, and

                        are arranged chronologically.

                   Biographical/Historical
Maud Hayes (1889-1972), also known as Ada Maud Hayes, was born in Locust Grove, Maryland
to Owen and Charlotte "Lottie" Willis Hayes and raised on the eastern shore of Maryland
and Delaware. Maud was the youngest of 10 children and one of three girls. At the
age of 18, she began working as an artist's model at Howard Pyle's art institute in
Wilmington, Delaware, where she became one of Pyle's most sought after models. It
was here that she met illustrator and writer Frank Stick in 1906 at a party hosted
by one of Pyle's students. Maud and Frank were married in 1908.
In 1909, Maud gave birth to her first child, Charlotte. In 1919, the Sticks' second
child David was born. The birth aggravated a pre-existing hereditary disorder and
left Maud dependent upon a hearing aid for the rest of her life.
While at the Pyle school, Maud continued to model for Frank and other Pyle school
students. One of them, W. H. D. "Bill" Koerner, and his wife, Lillian, became close,
lifelong friends of the Sticks. Maud modeled for one of W.H.D. Koerner's most famous
paintings, "The Madonna of the Prairie," completed in 1921 and used as an illustration
for Emerson Hough's story "The Covered Wagon" serialized in the Saturday Evening Post.
Maud was an avid outdoorswoman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with her
husband in the wilderness. The couple spent 1912-1914 living in a remote cottage at
Squirrel Lake in northern Wisconsin, and later lived in the Chicago area, Wilmington,
Delaware, and Interlaken, New Jersey, before permanently relocating to the Outer Banks
of North Carolina in the late 1920s.
In 1924, the Stick family of four joined the Koerner family on a trip to the American
West. Traveling in two old touring cars, the group traveled 5,000 miles in 4 months,
ranging as far as Glacier National Park in northern Montana, camping and largely living
off the land the whole way. Beginning in 1929, the Sticks would make the Outer Banks
their primary home for the remainder of their lives. Maud and Frank dabbled in various
business and community endeavors, while Frank played a pivotal role in the establishment
of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
In 1954, Maud traveled throughout Europe with several friends. Maud and Frank often
wintered in Florida and took frequent trips to the Virgin Islands. Maud died in Kitty
Hawk, North Carolina, in 1972 after a long illness.
