Letters from William Hooper, Joseph Hewes, and John Penn in Philadelphia, one to Richard Bennehan (Jan., 1776) about Presbyterian ministers Elihu Spencer and Alexander McWhorter sent to preach the patriot cause (Jan., 1776); and three to N.C. Council of Safety (Aug.-Sept., 1776) concerning destruction of the Cherokee nation, ammunition, plans for salt making and for an ironworks in Chatham Co., recruitment of Continental soldiers, the Battle of Long Island and American retreat, and likelihood of British invasion of the state.
