Collection Overview
Papers related to the property and legal affairs of the Pollock and Devereux families,
including land deeds from Bertie, Martin, Halifax, Northampton, and Franklin counties,
as well as plats for the Hawfields property in Orange County. The collection includes
documents concerning enslaved individuals, such as bills of sale, lists, and estate
records. Among these are the estate papers of George Pollock (1839-1843), which include
the division of 1,086 enslaved people into family groups.
The collection also contains wills from Thomas Rhodes and James Rhodes (Bertie County,
1795 and 1799), Thomas Barker (Chowan County, 1786), George P. Devereux (unprobated,
1835), and Elizabeth Hinton (Wake County, 1865). Additional materials include a tenant
list from the Hawfields property (1831); account books from the "Runeroi" plantation,
kept by John Devereux for Mrs. Frances Devereux (1845-1849); papers related to a legal
dispute between John Devereux and Malachi Weston; and an agreement between Thomas
Pollock Devereux and George E. Badger (1864). The collection also contains a few business
letters and a political speech opposing Governor William W. Holden, likely from Wake
County, around 1865.
