    This item includes an 1783 letter from Jesse Benton of Orange County, N.C., father of U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton, addressed to Thomas Hart of Maryland, concerning legal disputes and the pursuit of enslaved individuals who had escaped bondage. The reverse side of the letter includes valuations of property in what may be St. Mark's District, Maryland.
    Also included is a 1781 inventory documenting Benton's land, enslaved individuals, livestock, and building materials, reflecting the economic foundation of his household, which was built in part on the exploitation of enslaved labor.
