    Papers of Major Hinton of Wake Co., state treasurer (1839-1843,1845-1851). Earliest letters are to Samuel F. Patterson, commissioner for sale of Cherokee land, including one from Gov. Edward B. Dudley and nine from Hinton making arrangements for the sale and discussing Whig politics (1838-1839). Other correspondents include William J. Bingham, T. Pollock Burgwyn, H. W. Guion, J. W. Devereux concerning land for sale in Georgia, Alabama, and Jones Co. (N.C.); students at Bingham School and at Furman Theological Seminary, S.C.; traveling painter William B. Overby; a runaway slave; and politics. Printed letters concern an Episcopal church in Chapel Hill and a life insurance company in Vermont. Also bills and receipts (1841-1850) for Hinton's family and his wards, including medical and dental expenses for family and slaves and educational expenses at St. Mary's and UNC.
