Collection Overview
Papers of Caswell of Kinston, delegate to Continental Congress (1774-1776), major
general of the state militia (1780-1781), and governor (1776-1780, 1785-1787), including
journal of trip by Caswell to Philadelphia for first Continental Congress (Sept.-Nov.,
1774); letter to son William describing journey to Philadelphia in May, 1775, and
military preparations in Virginia, Maryland, and Philadelphia; letters to Caswell
from Francis Locke, William R. Davie, and Abner Nash, and from Caswell to Nathanael
Greene about campaign in the Carolinas (1780-1781); contemporary copies of letters
to Brig. Gen. Henry W. Harrington from Caswell and Horatio Gates (frag., n.d.); letter
about land in Tennessee from Arthur Campbell of Virginia (1782); suggestions for legislation
from Christopher Neale (1783); and note from James Glasgow recommending a doctor (1789).
Also in collection are list of slaves (1781?) and letter about Caswell's estate. Photocopies
of Caswell papers in the Emmet Collection of the New York Public Library and in the
Library of Congress include statement of members' allowances by General Assembly committee
of accounts (1756); messages from Governor Caswell to the assembly (1777); and correspondence
of Caswell while governor (1777-1779) with John Penn, Cornelius Harnett, Jethro Sumner,
John Rutledge, Joseph Hewes, James Hogun, and Benjamin Lincoln and as militia general
(1780-1781) with Horatio Gates, Baron de Kalb, Griffith Rutherford, John Donaldson,
Nathanael Greene, William Caswell, and Alexander Lillington. Other photocopies include
letters from Benjamin Hawkins to Edward Salter about armed brigantines chartered for
the state (1779); from Gov. Patrick Henry about schemes for European settlements in
western lands to teach and protect the Indians (1785); and from Governor Caswell to
Massachusetts Gov. James Bowdoin about delegates to trade convention at Annapolis
(1786).
