Collection Overview
Consists of financial records, deeds, certificates, and receipts, tributes, biographical information, clippings, miscellaneous items, and correspondence of former Congressman William Alexander Smith (1828-1888) (small quantity) and descendants, including son, Claude W. Smith (d. 1917); son, Roger A. Smith, M.D. (1859-1952), and his wife, Elizabeth Woodard Smith (1862-1946) of Goldsboro; and grandson, William A. Smith, M.D. (1888-1970) and his wife Carmen Emily Kellner (1890-1983), and a small quantity of material concerning their children William A. Smith, Jr. (b. 1925) and Bette Smith Elliot (1921-2004). Many of the letters were exchanged between Dr.William A. Smith and his parents, and his wife, Carmen, when William was stationed in the U.S. Medical Corps at Fort Sam Houston, Tex., the Panama Canal Zone, 1931-1933, and Italy, 1944-1945; other letters, post WWII are from various people that William met during service years. Additionally, there is material from the post WWII era when William served as director, Tuberculosis Control, N.C. Board of Health.
