Papers of the family of Scott, Alamance Co. legislator, agricultural leader, and father of Gov. W. Kerr Scott. Letters from Scott (1879-1921) are mainly to his fiance/wife Lizzie J. Hughes, written from home, from Houghton Farm in New York State as student of experimental farming, from the South and Midwest as traveling tobacco salesman, and from Raleigh as legislator (1889, 1891, 1901). Other letters include several to and about his son Edwin, who died in the army (1918). Letters to Scott are from family members about local events and schools and colleges in Raleigh, Statesville, Reidsville, and Cedar Grove; from Mary Bingham of Oaks; from friends at Houghton Farm, especially owner H. E. Alvord about experiments and farm machinery; from friends about his wedding (1883) and his wife's death (1914); and from Josephus Daniels, Benjamin W. Kilgore, Marcus C. S. Noble, Clarence Poe, and Francis D. Winston, supporting him for State Board of Agriculture in 1915.
Correspondence (1868-1882) of his sister Frances Josephine Scott Smith contains letters from students and teachers, including S. K. and Maria Nash of the Nash-Kollock School in Hillsborough; from uncle touring Europe (1868) and friend returning to Scotland (1875-1878); and from young relative sent for safety away from troubled Alamance Co. (Aug., 1870). Her correspondence with fiancee W. G. Smith of Milton is also included. Letters from S. Lizzie Kerr include description of the triumphal return to Raleigh of the men arrested by Col. G. W. Kirk (1870) and of her teaching at Simonton Female College in Statesville. A few letters from Scott's father Henderson Scott mention his farming, tanning, slaves, the railroad, Hawfields Church (Presbyterian), Dr. Wilson's school, and mining (1852-1857).
Many papers relate to R. W. Scott's daughter Josephine Scott Hudson, home economics extension agent, and her husband Cassius Rex Hudson, supervisor of farm demonstration work and later of extension work with Negroes (1925-1940). Letters from C. R. Hudson (1905-1915) concern Farmers' Union, Farmers' Institute, Corn Crop Boys, state and county fairs, and conventions. Letters to C. R. and Josie Hudson are from friends at N.C. and U.S. departments of agriculture; from Clarence Poe, Josephus Daniels, and Julius I. Foust; from Edwin and W. Kerr Scott (1918, 1937); from Scottish army corporal in France (1916), India (1918), and the U.S. (1929); and from Negro students at NC A&T (1925). Letters to Josie (1940, 1951-1963) concern Terry Sanford's campaign for governor (1960) and memorials to C. R. Hudson and W. Kerr Scott. Several undated letters are from servicemen during and after WWII. Pocket diaries of C. R. (1910-1940) contain notes on conferences (1906, 1911) and on his travels and appointments as extension agent for Negroes; Mrs. Hudson's diaries include descriptions of Women's Institute meetings across the state (1910). Her scrapbooks are about Robert W. and Elizabeth Hughes Scott, the Hudson family, W. Kerr Scott (1896-1958), and the family's history. Also in the collection are some of W. Kerr Scott's speeches; Democratic campaign material (1890-1963); invitations and programs for graduations, receptions, concerts, and governor's inaugural balls (1949, 1961); church bulletins; "ag songs" by C. R. Hudson; and the Haw River School attendance register (1904-1905).
