Collection Overview
The North Carolina Film Board was established by Governor Terry Sanford in 1962 under
the direction of James Beveridge, of the Canadian National Film Board. The North Carolina
Film Board Papers reflect the daily office activities of the Film Board, 1963-1965.
The collection is arranged into three series: General Correspondence, General Files,
and Subject Files.
Between 1962-1965 the Film Board created seventeen progressive films documenting the
changing social and economic landscape of North Carolina and the state's contributions
to American history.A majority of the material in this collection dates from 1964-1965.
The collection contains general correspondence and responses to a letter of May 17,
1965 calling upon patrons of the Film Board to lobby for its continued funding, inter-office
notes and memos reflecting daily communications between Director of the Film Board
James Beveridge, the Films Officer Ruth Lieban in Chapel Hill, and the Film Board
Librarian, Violet Galvin as well as general Film Board files. The Film Board files,
arranged alphabetically by subject, includes documents relating to film shoots such
as camera reports, work orders, scripts, and production schedules; responses to invitations
to film premieres including Land of Beginnings in January 1965 and Search for Excellence
in May 1965, and requests for film prints; and film distribution statistics, promotional
materials and publications featuring the film board.
