Collection Overview
Papers of Walton H. Riggs and son George, chiefly consisting of receipts and invoices (1836-1914) for their general store in South Mills, Camden Co., for goods purchased in Norfolk, Va., and (after 1892) in Elizabeth City, and for farm produce and skins sold to commission merchants in Norfolk. Letters to Walton Riggs concern another mill and store he managed (1838-1840); friends in Texas and Louisiana (1854-1861); George's education (1853-1861); and note about Union cavalry horses left in his care (1863). Also his marriage certificate (1842) and appointments to school committee (1859-1861). Papers of George Riggs, who served a term as legislator in 1881, include teacher's certificate (1860); lists of pupils (n.d., 1864); letters about Baltimore Commercial College (1866-1867); and letters from friends and relatives, especially in Norfolk (1889-1912). His business papers concern the store in South Mills; a store in Portsmouth, Va., and partner in Annapolis, Md. (1865-1866); schooner owned with John Jacobs (1874-1876); and patent medicines. Papers concerning his service on county board of commissioners (1870-1895) include letters about county's exhibit in Southern Exposition (1891) and about school districts (1898); and notes on navigation in county waterways (n.d.). Also some financial records of McBride's Methodist Episcopal Church South (1880-1916) and New Lebanon Masonic Lodge (1894-1914). Other papers concern estates of William B. Dozier, J. K. Abbott, and Evan and Ollie Overton; and bankruptcy of Joseph W. Pool, George F. Spencer, and John A. Spence. Miscellaneous items include manuscript poems and songs; printed speech on tobacco tax by U.S. Sen. John W. Johnston of Virginia (1870); and printed address by Republican state executive committee about Constitutional Convention of 1875.
