Gale's cashbook and diary (1794-1795) record his preparations in Germany and voyage to America. Photocopies of letters (1820-1837) from Gales, his wife, and two sons to historian Jared Sparks concern family, persecution of Unitarians, publications by Sparks and Joseph Gales, Jr., in Washington, D.C. novelist Caroline Lee Whiting Hentz and husband at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina Revolutionary records (including the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence). Also original speech to the Raleigh City Guards (1834) and correspondence (1863-1864) between Maj. Seaton Gales, brigade staff officer in Virginia, and his wife concerning Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, death of Stonewall Jackson, Generals W. R. Cox and S. D.
