    Collection Overview

    Papers of the family of John Allen of Alamance Co., including Granville land grant (Orange Co., 1756) and copy of will (Chester Co., Pa., 1769) of his father John, Sr.; grants, plats, and deed for land in Orange and Chatham counties (1789-1797); tax receipts (1800-1826); account books for goods and services (Deep River, Guilford Co., 1772- 1808); almanac with notes on weather (1817); drafts of wills; and estate papers (1826-1849). Papers of son William Allen include tax receipts (1826-1866), Orange Co. deed for mining rights (1844), and general merchandise daybook and ledger (1827-1864, 1900-1905) also containing record of marriages (1841-1843) and some labor accounts. Family letters include several from tinsmith in Fayetteville (1828-1829), and many from Quaker relatives in Indiana (1824-1877) about family, local news, wages, the railroad and internal improvements, a congressional election (1847), preacher to Negroes (1847), Quaker meetings, and migration further west, with letter describing Kansas (1870). Also Randolph Co. estate papers of Samuel Stout (1801-1802); agreement with hired laborer (1811); papers relating to schools at Rock Spring, Deep River, and Salem, (1815-1816, n.d.); papers of Deep River Society and the Logician Society (n.d.); and medical recipes of Rachel Stout Allen. Genealogical information concerns connections by marriage with Hermon Husband and Simon Dixon. See also Mf.P. 77.
