Collection Overview

Papers of Dr. Webb, Hillsborough physician, UNC trustee, and agent for the Bank of Cape Fear. Most of the collection concerns Webb as bank agent: correspondence (1827-1846) with other agents, cashiers, and State Bank officials on discounts, currency values, bank failures (1839), and other bank business; list of debts due at Hillsborough (1828); financial statement of bank (1840); list of stockholders (1841); protest against the Wilmington bank for refusing to pay notes in specie (1841); and an account between branches at Hillsborough and Raleigh (1842-1844). Some material relates to land owned by Webb and associates in Tennessee and Alabama, with letters describing land and economic conditions in western Tennessee (1837). Also inquiries from people who moved west concerning Orange Co. property and estate settlements; and some estate papers of Henry Neal. Other letters discuss private business matters, prices in Wilmington, Roanoke Navigation Company stock, pension application procedure (1836), and sale of university land. A letter from District Quartermaster Nicholas Long to Gov. Thomas Burke concerns ammunition supplies (Aug., 1781), and there is a copy of a military grant of land in Tennessee to Col. Martin Armstrong (1786). Other papers of James Webb are in the Southern Historical Collection, UNC.
