Abstract
Rotary International is an organization with local chapters whose stated purpose is
to "bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service,
encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace
in the world." The Manteo Rotary Club was chartered in 1936 and is currently part
of District 7720. This collection consists of correspondence, club records, photographs,
and membership and event information.

Collection Overview
The Manteo Rotary Club Records, 1926-2021, contains correspondence, meeting minutes,
financial records, photographs, and other administrative records created by members
of the Manteo Rotary Club's executive board. Included in the collection is documentation
of the various projects and events organized by the club, including the annual Rockfish
Rodeo/Inshore Slam and other fundraisers. Foundational papers, including constitutions,
bylaws, articles of incorporation, and early correspondence are included in the collection.
Additionally, materials relating to the 771st District and Rotary International are
included.
Historical Note
Rotary International's stated purpose is to "bring together business and professional
leaders to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations,
and help build goodwill and peace in the world." The first Rotary Club was formed
in 1905 by attorney Paul P. Harris. The first meeting was held with three of his friends.
They chose the name Rotary because they rotated club meetings to each member's office
each week. Today the club consists of 1.2 million businesses, professionals, and community
leaders.
The Manteo Rotary Club was chartered in 1936. As of 2022, the club still operates
at 108 Budleigh St., Manteo, N.C., and is currently in District 7720. In 1998, the
club began hosting an annual fishing tournament, the Rockfish Rodeo, as a fundraiser
for its scholarship program. The tournament has been held annually since, but in 2014,
its name changed to the Inshore Slam and its focus broadened in order to guard against
over-depletion of the local rockfish population.

members of the Manteo Rotary Club's executive board. Some early letters are grouped
together according to the board member with which they are affiliated. Most of the
