    Collection Overview

Papers of Trotter, native of Scotland, trained as gardener in Stirling, who emigrated to Buncombe Co. in 1850 and later moved to Greenville, S.C. Letters are chiefly to him from Scotland and England concerning family and friends (1846-1861), two from girlfriend planning to join him in America. A letter from Edmund Molyneux seeks gardener for Alexander Robertson of Buncombe Co. (1850); and one from superintendent of education in South Carolina (Nov., 1865) asks him to start a school for Negro children in Anderson. Also filmed are Greenville Co. (S.C.) deeds (1866-1889), appointments as postmaster, and letter from WWI soldier to Mrs. J. W. Trotter, Wilmington.
