Abstract
The Cumberland Battalion Papers contains a small selection of original archival materials documenting the service and payment of the Cumberland Battalion, formed in 1785 to build and guard a road in the western territory from the Clinch River to Nashville. The materials also document the militia of Davidson County, Tennessee, that was called out by Col. James Robertson for the Third Chickamauga Expedition of 1787. This records group covers the period 1786 to 1792. It contains list of troops raised to defend Davidson County, monthly troop returns, food rations and provisions records, payrolls, receipts, financial settlements with those involved in the Third Chickamauga Expedition, and other documents.

Collection Overview
The Cumberland Battalion Papers contains a small selection of original archival materials
documenting the service and payment of the Cumberland Battalion, formed in 1785 to
build and guard a road in the western territory from the Clinch River to Nashville.
The materials also document the militia of Davidson County, Tennessee, that was called

The Cumberland Battalion Papers is a records group within the Military Collection
at the State Archives of North Carolina. The materials in the collection were collected
by the North Carolina Historical Commission and the State Archives of North Carolina
(which formed out of the Historical Commission) after the Commission was formed in
1903. The origins of some of the documents is unknown, as they came in during the
early days of what became the Archives. This records group was formed the State Archives
sometime between the 1920s and the 1960s, from scattered records likely already held
in some state government records and from public donors. The collection is arranged
in 1 slim archival box.
