Arlice G. Atwood World War II Scrapbook and Military Ephemera, AV.7020
Abstract
Arlice Gilbert Atwood (1927-2006) was born in Alleghany County, North Carolina. He
served in the Merchant Marines prior to enlisting in the Army in 1946. He was stationed
in Germany, Japan, and Korea where he participated in the landing at Incheon. Following
the Korean War, Arlice worked as a recruiter for the U.S. Army and Air Force in eastern
North Carolina. In 1957, he returned to duty in East Asia during the early years of
the Vietnam War before finishing his career at duty stations state-side and in Europe.
Atwood continued his career as a civilian as a sales representative before returning
to Sparta to serve as an administrator at Alleghany Hospital. Arlice and his wife,
Opal, began to winter in Green Valley, Arizona in 1980 and moved there permanently
in 1997.
This collection is comprised chiefly of one scrapbook of clippings about servicemen
and women from Alleghany County, North Carolina during World War II.

Biographical/Historical
Arlice Gilbert Atwood (1927-2006) was born in Alleghany County, North Carolina, the
son of George Calloway and Mertie May Murry Atwood. He and his older brother, George,
attended Pine Swamp School and Sparta High School.
When he registered for the draft in 1945, Atwood was attending the U.S. Maritime Training
Station in Brooklyn, N.Y. He served in the Merchant Marines prior to enlisting in
the Army in 1946. He was stationed in Germany, Japan, and Korea where he participated
in the landing at Incheon.
In March of 1950, he married Opal Nichols (1930-2020) at the home of Ruby Durham in
Elkton, Surry County, North Carolina.
Following the Korean War, Arlice worked as a recruiter for the U.S. Army and Air Force
at Wilmington, North Carolina and Greenville, North Carolina. In 1957, he returned
to duty in East Asia during the early years of the Vietnam War before finishing his
military career at duty stations state-side and in Europe. Arlice Atwood retired from
the U.S. Army in 1967 with the rank of major.
Atwood continued his civilian career as a sales representative for the Taylor Biscuit
Company before returning to Sparta to serve as an administrator at Alleghany Hospital.
He retired from this second career in 1984.
Arlice and Opal began to winter in Green Valley, Arizona in 1980 and moved there permanently
in 1997.
