Biographical/Historical
Camp Elliott, located between Old Fort and Bat Cave, North Carolina was established
on 25 acres donated by the Elliott Family of Old Fort, NC. The camp, which received
its first campers in 1928, was organized under the auspices of the YMCA Interstate
Committee. The first summer, C.A. Witherspoon of Hickory was camp director, and approximately
75 boys from 25 cities attended. Campers participated in typical summer camp activities
such as nature study, crafts, swimming, storytelling, hiking, tennis and volleyball.
By 1931, a summer camp session for girls was added. In the 1950s, Camp Elliott came
under the direction of the Cannon Memorial YMCA in Kannapolis, NC.
