The Outer Banks History Center Postcard Collection was assembled over a period of several years by Outer Banks History Center staff. The postcards primarily document the North Carolina tourism industry, with a particular focus on Dare County and eastern North Carolina. Collection Overview

The Outer Banks History Center Postcard Collection, 1905-2005, contains approximately 1,000 postcards from the Outer Banks, other areas of North Carolina, and the eastern United States. Most of the postcards are standard 3.5" by 5.5.", although sizes up to 7" by 11.5" ("Giant" postcards), including about ten panoramic postcards, are included. The majority of the postcards are blank, but several contain personal messages and are postmarked to or from Outer Banks residents. In addition to individual postcards, this collection also includes several booklets of related postcards (primarily scenes from the Dare County coast and other tourist destinations). Postcards are color, black and white, or sepia toned.

Most heavily represented in the collection are postcards related to Roanoke Island, which include scenes from the Lost Colony, the Elizabethan Gardens, Fort Raleigh, and buildings in downtown Manteo. Postcards from Currituck County include three early 20th-century scenes of Pine Island (Currituck Banks, North Carolina), including the Baum Family house, Pine Island Clubhouse, and a horse and buggy on Pine Island beach.

Postcards, negatives, and contact sheets, and prints donated by Willard E. Jones include the following topics: Roanoke Island, Manteo, Dare County, Fort Raleigh, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Wright Brothers Memorial, Lost Colony, Cape Hatteras, New Bern, Edenton, Hertford, Elizabeth City, Coinjock, and various Outer Banks scenes.
