1953 USAF Operation Christmas Dance Ticket,
Abstract
The 1953 USAF Operation Christmas Dance Ticket collection is composed of one original
ticket for the Dance for Operation Christmas, held in the Charles T. Woollen Gymnasium
at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill campus on Saturday, November 14, 1953.
Occurring on the same night as the UNC-Notre Dame college basketball game, the dance
was to feature the U.S. Air Force Glenn Miller Band. The dance was sponsored by the
Chapel Hill (NC) Jaycees and Pope Air Force Base, NC, with the proceeds from the event
to go to the "orphans of North Carolina" [believed to be a reference to the Children's
Home Society of North Carolina]. Such sponsored dances within North Carolina communities
were commonly supported by the various U.S. military branches and installations in
the state, such as Fort Bragg, Camp Lejeune, and Pope Air Force Base. The ticket documents
an aspect of social history during the Korean War era in North Carolina.
