Collection Overview

Series consists of various sets of accounts. One account records provisions issued to volunteers assembled at the camp of instruction near Raleigh in April and May 1861. Another consists of twelve related accounts dated October 1861- July 1862, apparently prepared by Quartermaster John Devereux. Nine accounts relate to state-funded blockade-running operations of the steamers Advance, Hansa, Don, and Annie, January 1864 to February 1865. A Cotton and Wool Account Book, 1862-1865, is the cash book of the assistant quartermaster responsible for the manufacture and acquisition of clothing for North Carolina troops; it contains record of payments made to suppliers of cloth, wool, and clothing for the state. Also included are lists of state agents for the exchange of cotton yarn for wool, and of woolen mills and cotton factories in North Carolina.
