Joseph Graham Papers, RW 1

Papers of General Joseph Graham, Revolutionary officer, state senator, Lincoln County iron manufacturer, and commander of militia in Creek War (1814). Material on the Revolution includes his pension application and drafts of four articles and a letter written by Graham (1820-1821, 1827) concerning action in western North Carolina from June 1780, to March 1781, with sketches of positions at Cowan's Ford and Clapp's Mill. Most of the collection concerns the militia from North and South Carolina sent to join Andrew Jackson against the Creek Nation in Alabama: an 1813 printed roster of N.C. militia officers; a South Carolian muster roll; orderly books, including court-martial proceedings; general orders; monthly and weekly returns; quartermaster returns; statistical report on distressed Creeks being fed; and a descriptive list of Black prisoners. Letters (Feb.- Sept. 1814) and Graham's letter book (May-July) contain information on appointments of officers, preparations, transportation and mail problems, relations with Native Americans, horse stealing, location of British troops, and reception of prisoners, with sketches and descriptions of Battle of Horseshoe Bend and four forts built by the Carolina Brigade. Later militia papers include annual troop returns for 5th Division, 10th and 15th Brigades N.C. Militia (primarily Rutherford County regiments and cavalry), 1814-1819; some general orders; and correspondence (1814-1823). There are also writings by Graham and correspondence about iron ores and furnaces; internal improvements, especially railroads and a port (1833); and taxation, surplus fund, schools, an asylum, and penitentiaries (1836). An anti-Van Buren circular is from Caswell County. (1836). Correspondents include Ephraim Davidson, Benjamin Hawkins, William Hawkins, Andrew Jackson, Denison Olmsted, Thomas Pinckney, William Polk, and Montfort Stokes.
