Collection Overview
Military papers of Brigadier General Sumner, Virginia native, resi- dent of Warren
Co., including orders during the French and Indian War from Col. William Byrd and
Henry Bouquet. Correspondence from the Revolutionary period includes letters from
Charles Lee, Ab- ner Nash, Nicholas Long (deputy quartermaster), John Baptista Ashe,
Benjamin Seawell, and Alexander Brevard; copies of letters from John Ashe to Benjamin
Lincoln and from Horatio Gates and William Lee Davidson to Sumner; and drafts of Sumner
to Nathanael Greene and others. Topics include desertions (1776), draft and reen-
listments (1778-1783), provisions and arms, transportation, plans and orders, relationships
between the Continental Line and the militia (1781), reorganization of officers (1782),
and inflation (1783). Also in- cluded are notes on courts of enquiry into disputes
over rank and over discharge eligibility claimed by soldiers of the 3rd N.C Battalion
(1777); a report on meeting of North Carolina Virginia officers in Surry Co. (Oct.,
1780) calling for surrender of insurgents after battle at Shallowford; and photograph
of Sumner's certification of delegates to the general convention of the Society of
the Cincinnati (1784).
