    Papers of Penn, Granville Co. lawyer, member of the N.C. Board of War, delegate to the Continental Congress (1775-1779) and signer of the Declaration of Independence, including letter (Feb., 1776) from Penn in Philadelphia to Thomas Person about British plans, need to raise battalions in North Carolina, foreign trade, and the need for alliances and perhaps independence. Photocopies include guardian's permission for marriage of Frances Penn to John Hunt (Granville Co., 1771), list of goods sent North Carolina prisoners of war in South Carolina (1780), Penn's will and codicils (1784), memorandums to Granville Co. Clerk of Court Reuben Searcy about various lawsuits (1784-1787), a Granville Co. ordinary bond (1785), and a deed of gift (1788) from Penn to son William for land in Granville Co. Also an unidentified lawyer's account book (previously ascribed to John Penn) recording travels to courts in Rowan, Mecklenburg, Tryon, Anson, and Orange counties (1769-1770) and accounts with clients and with Col. Edmund Fanning.
