Papers of William B. Rodman, planter, lawyer, Confederate officer, associate justice of N.C. Supreme Court (1868-1878), and grandson of John Gray Blount, consisting of correspondence, receipts, business and legal papers, and account books, reflecting antebellum operation of plantations, slaves, exports (turpentine, lumber, cotton), and his law practice and legal cases (briefs, interrogations, estates, af- fidavits, etc.) in county courts of law and equity in Beaufort, Martin, Pitt, Hyde, Craven, Greene, and Washington counties (1839-1867). Four ledgers contain notes on cases in the state supreme court. Other material relates to Rodman's activities as agent for heirs of the John Gray Blount lands in North Carolina and Tennessee and as member of the Constitutional Convention of 1868 (ordinances and committee reports) and the Code Commission, 1868-1869 (reports and bills). Of interest are a plat by John Strother of Green Swamp land in Hyde County, n.d.; town plan of Hamilton, Martin Co., as of 1802 (n.d.); and letters describing conditions in Monrovia for a former slave (1853), suitability of Beaufort harbor for a naval base (1853), and patriotic fever in northern cities on eve of the Civil War. Papers of Rodman's daughter Lida Tunstall Rodman (1859-1932), state regent for DAR (1915-1916), state president of the UDC (1898- 1900), vice-president of Colonial Dames (1916), state treasurer of the Equal Suffrage Association (1915-1916), and county chairman of Women's Liberty Loan Committee (1918). There is material on all these organizations for Miss Rodman's term of office. Correspondence is from family, clubwomen, and relatives in- terested in genealogy of the Blounts and related families.
