Letter to Gov. Thomas Burke from Jones, Halifax Co. legislator, president of N.C. Council of Safety (1776), and member of Continental Congress (1780-1781), relaying rumors of a British cavalry raid toward Halifax from Virginia (July, 1781). Material relating to Jones includes a biographical sketch by Fred A. Olds; appeals for preservation of "Constitution House" and Jones's home "The Grove" in Halifax; statement by descendant of Allen Jones concerning John Paul Jones's adoption of that surname; and a photocopy of "The Willie Jones-John Paul Jones Tradition" by Samuel Eliot Morison (William and Mary Quarterly, Apr., 1959).
