    Biographical/Historical

    James Buchanan was born April 23, 1791 in Mercersburg, Pa., and died June 1, 1868 in Lancaster, Pa. He was an attorney by profession and state politician, and served in the the United States House and Senate. He was also U. S. ambassador to Russia and Great Britain and had been Secretary of State under President Pierce. Buchanan served as president of the United States between 1857 and 1961.
