Collection Overview
Letters and papers of Thomas Pollock (1654-1722) on Chowan River [Bertie Co.], member of the council (1684-1722) and acting governor of North Carolina (1712-1714, 1722) and of his descendants. The Pollock letter book (1708-1761) includes Thomas Pollock's official correspondence as acting governor and his descriptions of the beginning of the Cary rebellion with copy of protest sent by William Glover to the "pretended Assembly" (1708), death of Governor Hyde, punishment of the rebels, aftermath of the Tuscarora War (1712), Tuscarora King Tom Blunt, the Meherrin Indians, Baron de Graffenried, need for ministers and schoolmasters, and sale of lots in Edenton (1720). His business letters in the letter book discuss commerce, the building or chartering of vessels, New England traders, goods ordered including slaves, and the Admiralty Court(1719). Included are letters of Cullen Pollock (1737-1752) concerning trade, relatives in "North Brittain," actions of the assembly (1746/7), and the education of his sons by a Parson Webb in Suffolk, Va.; those from George Pollock (1761-1762) include several to English friends describing return to North Carolina and travel to Wilmington for General Assembly (1761) and a letter to Earl Granville concerning the inability of the poor to pay quitrent arrearages. Also a 1730 grant and copies of grants to Thomas Pollock (1713/4-1730); deeds for land in eastern counties (1732-1842); lists of Pollock lands (ca. 1763, 1837) and quitrents due Granville (1745-1750); fishing agreements; copies of wills (1749-1795); inventories of plantations in 1763 (including books and slaves), 1770, and 1809; slave bill of sale; bills of exchange for de Graffenried and Company, 1711-1712; part of a diary (Edenton, n.d.) referring to Mr. Iredell; a few items concerning Thomas Pollock Devereux (1816-1839), and a Pollock genealogy, 1654-1733, apparently from the family Bible.
