Collection Overview
Papers of Branch, congressman (1855-1861) and Confederate brigadier general, consisting
primarily of letters, orders, and reports relating to his brigade in 1862 at New Bern
and in the Seven Days' campaign, including letters or orders from Joseph R. Anderson,
Robert H. Cowan, Richard C. Gatlin, Maxcy Gregg, A. P. Hill, Joseph E. Johnston, and
Robert Ransom; reports by his colonels; copies of reports by Branch and of messages
from Stonewall Jackson, Joseph E. Johston, and Robert E. Lee; and lists of officers
elected and relieved in reorganization of the 18th Regt. (Apr., 1862). Other papers
include Branch's law license and commissions, one as director for the state in the
Raleigh and Gaston Railroad Company (1852); his speeches on education, direct taxation,
railroads, agriculture, the Lecompton Constitution, and federal nonintervention, with
a copy of a proposed constitutional amendment concerning slavery, admission of new
states, and fugitive slaves (n.d.). Also in collection are copies of wills of John
Branch, Sr. (1805-1806), and speech of Florida territorial Gov. John Branch (1845).
Addition in 2012 of one photographic image of Confederate brigadier general Lawrence
O'Bryan Branch, a carte de visite measuring 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 inches, probably taken in
1862 prior to the summer battles culminating in his death at Antietam, (17 September
1862). Signed on the bottom front, "Genl L. O'B. Branch."
Note that the image has been dated 1862 because the back of the carte de visite bears
the logo of E. and H.T. Anthony (New York, N.Y.); and the history of the company indicates
that the name was changed in 1862 from E. Anthony to E. and H.T. Anthony. The company
was noted for publishing carte de visites and photographic albums using photographs
(daguerreotypes and ambrotypes) taken by Mathew B. Brady and Brady's National Portrait
Gallery. However, the photographer of this image cannot be stated with certainty.
