Letters and other papers of Kilgore, assistant chemist, N.C. Agricultural Experiment Station, 1889-1898; state chemist of Mississippi, 1898-1899; state chemist of North Carolina, 1899-1919; director of the N.C. Agricultural Experiment Station and Extension Service, 1911-1921; and U.S. Department of Agriculture Director of Extension Service for North Carolina, 1919-1920. Most of the items concern his professional activities and include research notes and reports; addresses; minutes of various committees and boards; and correspondence with research chemists in the United States, county agents in North Carolina, federal extension service officials, purchasers of cotton seed and other products, and sellers of farm equipment and supplies. There is correspondence with his relatives in Mississippi, Guatemala, and Mexico, and letters relating to his investments in land and securities and operation of his farm in Bertie Co. Financial reports and correspondence with Clarence Poe, Tait Butler, and others concern the Progressive Farmer (1905-1921) and his investment in it. Other correspondents include Julian S. Carr, W. C.
