Henry Toole Clark (1808-1874) Papers, PC.235

Papers of Henry T. Clark of Edgecombe Co., speaker of the state Senate (1858-1861) and governor (1861-1862). Clark's scrapbooks include clippings on reorganization of state troops (1861-1862), listing of officers and men with notes added by Clark on promotions or deaths, and a few printed orders from the adjutant general's office. A number of clippings and two broadsides by U.S. Gen. A. E. Burnside and U.S. Col. Edward E. Potter concern Federal occupation of coastal North Carolina, appointment of Rev. Marble Nash Taylor as provisional governor, and the 1st N.C. Union Volunteers. Other wartime clippings concern conscription, Indian allies, the Confederate constitution, suggested adoption of metric system by Confederacy, southern sympathizers in the North, confiscation, and imprisonment of Rose O'Neal Greenhow in Washington. There are also newspaper extras about Ft. Sumter and First Manassas, printed map of Big Bethel, manuscript map of the Battle of New Bern (1862), and published letters and proclamations by generals and governors. Postwar clippings concern Civil War generals, other notables, UDC, and WWI. Miscellaneous items (1787-1869) include receipt (1795) from Stephen Cabarrus of Bertie Co.; note from John Tipton about John Sevier and his "gang" (1788); certification of Willie P. Mangum as U.S. senator (1830); poem characterizing members of the N.C. Senate (Aug.-Sept., 1861); note from U.S. Military Gov. Edward Stanly in New Bern forwarding letters to General [Robert?] Ransom (1862); and drafts of postwar letters to Southerner (Tarboro) about Democratic primaries and campaign expenditures.
