Papers of the daughter of Maj. Orren Randolph Smith, including statements, reports, and articles relating to his claim to be designer of "Stars and Bars" Confederate flag. Correspondence and printed material relate chiefly to the Colonial Dames, DAR, and UDC (1915-1934). Letters from Mrs. Gutzon Borglum concern husband's designs for Confederate memorial at Stone Mountain and the North Carolina monument at Gettysburg (1928, n.d.); and there are statements about the Gettysburg monument and dissension over Borglum in the Stone Mountain Association. Also typescript speech by Rep. Sol Bloom of New York, associate director, George Washington bicentennial commission, at unveiling of Joseph Hewes memorial, Edenton (1932). Printed material includes speeches, pamphlets, and clippings about George Washington, Daughters of 1812, Confederate history and reunions, and White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. (1933).
