Collection Overview

Papers of Major Bagley (1833-1886), newspaper editor, legislator, private secretary and son-in-law of Gov. Jonathan Worth, and clerk of North Carolina Supreme Court (1868-1886). Bagley's letter book (1869-1882) contains replies to lawyers and local officials about court matters and letters about the Supreme Court Library, a mail contract for Cape Fear Steamship Company, and settlement of Governor Worth's estate. Routine papers of the office of the supreme court clerk, some from Bagley's predecessors Edmund B. Freeman (1843-1868) and Charles B. Root (1868-1869), include notices to county sheriffs (1858-1868); a few petitions to the court (1866-1868), one with opinion attached; records from probate and equity courts about suits and estate settlements (1849-1884); account book and letters about costs charged to each county (1870-1883); items (1863-1886) concerning the Supreme Court Library and printing of cases and decisions; and statement of "Official Moneys" in office, Jan. 19, 1869. Also copy of city commissioners' recommendation to supreme court on an appointment to Rex Hospital Board of Trustees (1871). Letters to Bagley and a few to Freeman, R. M. Pearson, W. N. H. Smith, and Willis Bagley are mainly from lawyers about cases, including R. H. Battle, Jr., W. P. Bynum, D. M. Furches, W. A. Graham, James T. Morehead, Lee S. Overman, R. B. Peebles, W. B. Rodman, D. Schenck, and others, with one from Chief Justice Smith about personal matters and Republican politics (1879) and one from Justice John H. Dillard about his resignation (1881). Personal papers of Bagley are in the Southern Historical Collection, UNC.
