Collection Overview
Papers of Miss Carraway of Wilson, schoolteacher and supervisor, and "Dixie Story Lady" and organizer with the Radcliffe Chautauqua and United Chautauquas. Correspondence (1913-1933) concerns Story-Tellers' Leagues and National Story League of which she was president in 1930; her radio stories (1924) and magazine articles; her Chautauqua work, especially booking towns; jobs and possible jobs with schools of speech in Washington, D.C., the Presbyterian church, Wilson Co. Health Department (1926), and Buncombe Co. schools' literacy program; recommendations from Cameron Morrison, Julius I. Foust, Arch T. Allen, Josephus Daniels, William L. Radcliffe, and others in educational and library work (1931-1933); and Junior Red Cross work in North Carolina. Also in the collection are materials from conventions and conferences; newsletters and bulletins; job applications; clippings; photographs; program of "North Carolina Radio School" (n.d.); notice of storytelling classes, Washington, D.C.; adaptations of stories; memorials, biographical sketches, and letters written after her death; and A Teacher's Book of Stories by Carraway (Raleigh, 1946).
