Papers of Colonel Heck of Raleigh, mainly concerning his business interests with Kemp P. Battle, Marmaduke J. Hawkins, A. B. Andrews, B. P. Williamson, Charles M. McGhee, and father-in-law Martin B. Callendine of Monongalia Co., W. Va. Correspondence, agreements, reports, financial and court papers involve enterprises such as North State Iron Works in Raleigh (1862); N.C. Land Agency (1865); property in West Virginia (1865-1868); building and development in Lockville, Ridgeway, and Raleigh (1868-1876); companies interested in coal, iron, and soapstone in Chatham, Lee, and Harnett counties, such as Deep River Navigation Company, Endor Iron Company, Cape Fear Iron and Steel Company, and Lobdell Car Wheel Company (1871-1879, 1899), including the latter's petition to the General Assembly (n.d.); companies and railroads concerned with coal in East Tennessee (1869-1897), including petition to the Interstate Commerce Commission protesting restraint of trade (1887) and testimony by C. S. Brice; and investment possibilities in Chicago. Land papers (1759-1884) from Cumberland, Stokes, Moore, Wake, Northampton, and Warren counties, West Virginia, and Tennessee relate to his investments, and there are contracts, specifications, and accounts (1868-1873) for houses built in Raleigh and Ridgeway. Personal items include Heck's commission in Virginia volunteers (1861); copy of inquiry to Judah P. Benjamin about work paroled men may do (1862); letter from Robert E. Lee (1866) and copy of one from Governor Worth about the Warren Co. grave of Annie Lee. Other letters and papers concern Morgantown, W. Va. (1869-1873); U.S. and Raleigh centennials; Fannie E.S. Heck, leader in Baptist Women's Missionary Union with tracts by her (1894-1923); and family history, including Revolutionary service record of Youst Heck and an English thirteenth-century deed.
