Pauline Smith (1890-1970) was the daughter of Edward Barrett and Cleora Cecil (Hale) Smith of Franklin County, N.C. Born in modest circumstances, she attended the East Carolina Teachers' Training Institute. She caught the attention of Jane S. McKimmon, who appointed her home demonstration agent, Franklin County, where she worked until 1949. Pauline married a dentist, Frank Oliver Alford (1899-1983).
