Collection Overview

Chiefly letters from Stanford of Hawfields, Democratic-Republican congressman (1791-1816) in Philadelphia and Washington, to his wife and to Capt. William Lytle about Revolutionary vouchers (1798-1799), events in Congress, slaves, his children, and peace (1815). A printed letter to constituents discusses actions of Congress from 1797 to 1808, comparing administrations of Adams and Jefferson (1808), Also in collection are letter from daughter at school in Salem (1806); copy of letter from William Gaston on death of Stanford; letter from Richard Stanford Stith of Mississippi about that branch of the family (1888); Stith and Travis birth and dates; and biographical sketches of Stanford.
