Collection Overview

Papers of Brown of Mt. Airy and Raleigh, clerk and later commissioner of the North Carolina Railroad Commission and the Corporation Commission (1891-1911). Concerning the commissions are a few letters and bills; a speech on history of banking in North Carolina to 1907, with statistics; and items concerning independent telephone companies and Brown's sale of land for the Railroad Commission (1887-1896). Personal letters and papers relate to his property and interests in Surry Co. and Raleigh, the Exchange Bank of Mt. Airy and its dissolution (1889,1898), Mt. Airy municipal bonds, settlemant of an estate in Mississippi (1892-1893) and receipts and bills from Raleigh firms (1891-1911). A letter from James Pou (1910) concerns plans for the Raleigh Country Club. Papers of Mrs. Brown (Mollie E. Merritt) include some personal letters (1883-1929) and an autograph album (Greensboro Female College, 1976); those relating to Dr. John R. Brown consist mainly of unsuccessful recommendations (1884-1901) for his appointment as assistant and later supervisor of the North Carolina Hospital for the Insane, citing work in Indiana and Tennesssee. A group of Civil War letters (1861-1865) are to Mrs. Jane Talley of Granville Co. from her sons, especially Henry C. Talley, 14th Va. Regt., in camps and hositals in Virginia and David's Island, N. Y. (Aug., 1863), listing company casualties during two battles in May, 1864, and commenting on bombproof shelter and Negro pickets (1864). Also in the collection are a Granville Co. guardian bond (1796) and school census reports from two Granville Co. districts (1881).
