Papers of J. H. Pratt, UNC professor, state geologist, and army engineer, including letters, appointments, and citations (1917-1921) relating to his WWI service in the National Guard and as colonel of 105th Engineers, 30th Division, and his history of that unit. Correspondents include Gen. John J. Pershing, Field Marshal Douglas Haig, Maj. Gen. William M. Black, Adj. Gen. William S. Biddle, and Lord Byng of Vimy. Family papers include items (1684-1855) from Windsor and Hartford, Conn., among them bonds, deeds, veterinary bill (1695), receipts, a will, poems, a list of deaths in Hartford (1766), and a Connecticut militia appointment (1855). Letters and papers from Opelousas and Washington, La. (1855-1862), describe family, farming, slaves, overseers, quarrels, politics, the home front during the Civil War, a trial for treason (1861), and entertainments. Also included are records relating to Capt. James C. Pratt, Co. F, 8th Regt. Louisiana Volunteers (1861-1862); letters from camps in Virginia, one signed by 25 officers of the regiment, muster rolls, and lists of recruits; circular and authorization for Pratt to raise company of Partizan Rangers (Cavalry), 1862; his appointment to aide to Brig. Gen. John G. Pratt (1863); letters to W. H. Pope in Raleigh, two from North Carolina soldier Charles H. Stephenson in Virginia (1863-1864); and a partial transcript of letter from an Alabama soldier describing the engagement between the Monitor and the Merrimac, 1862.
