Papers of related families of George Little (1810-1876), Raleigh attorney and businessman who married Margaret C. Haywood (1832) and whose son William married Margaret L. Mordecai (1870). Letters from George's wife describe Raleigh society and events. Other family letters concern local events in Warren Co. and Tennessee; a Burke Co. gold mine (1832); journey to Tennessee (1850); brother-in-law Dr. Charles Skinner's Warren Co. medical practice, farm, and politics; brother-in-law Philemon Haywood's career at Naval Academy and in naval service on Pacific coast (1840-1852); and son William at UNC (1858) and medical school in New York City (1859-1861).

Papers of George Little as aide-de-camp to Gov. Zebulon Vance (1862-1865) concern trade through blockade, Vance's candidacy for governor, and establishment of (Raleigh) Conservative in 1864. Little's business papers and letters involve family affairs; sale of family land in Tennessee; claims for Revolutionary and War of 1812 pensions; a tannery operated by Little and Charles Skinner in Raleigh (1846-1870); and trade with northern commission houses (1843-1876). There are reports and correspondence for Little as U.S. marshal in North Carolina (1845-1861); as secretary and later president of the North Carolina Land Company; and as state commissioner of immigration, including advertisements, legal documents, and correspondence with railroads, immigrants,and county agents. Also Little's personal accounts, receipts, deeds, slave papers, and will (1825-1876); personal correspondence and business records of his wife Margaret Mordecai Little, his sister Lucinda Little, and his five sons especially William Person Little, whose papers contain division of the Mordecai property, and estate papers of Martha (Pattie) Mordecai (d. 1949), and papers relating to the Masons (1905-1954) and to Christ Episcopal Church and St. Saviours Mission in Raleigh (1915-1939).

Most of the Mordecai family papers are those of Ellen (1790-1884), teacher at Warrenton Female Academy, including family letters; intermittent journals (1815-1832); almanacs containing brief comments; student register for Warrenton Academy (1809-1818); textbooks; and typed copy of a novel by her. Also personal, business, and estate papers of other Mordecais, notably George W., Henry, Samuel F., Jr., and Pattie Mordecai. Haywood family papers concern land in Edgecombe Co. (1742-1779) and Raleigh; partnership in a butcher business (1810-1821); and guest list for ball and dinner for General Lafayette in Raleigh (1825).

Papers of George Little's Warren Co. forebears include a few records of ancestors Christopher and Miles Gale and William Little (1713-1812); land and estate papers of William and Gen. Thomas Person (1760-1824); and correspondence and wills of George and Mary Ann Person Little (1761-1793). Papers of William Person and Ann Hawkins Little and of George's brothers Thomas and William concern the Warren Co. farm and land in Tennessee, with letters from George describing Raleigh and the General Assembly in the 1830s and 1840s. Other correspondents include Thomas Person, William A. Graham, Charles Manly, Zebulon B. Vance, John D. Whitford, William Polk, Leonidas Polk.
