Collection Overview

Papers of Weldon N. Edwards (1788-1873) of Warren Co., protege of Sen. Nathaniel Macon, legislator, Democratic congressman (1816-1827), and president of the 1861 Secession Convention. Correspondence (1817-1873) deals mainly with politicians such as James Buchanan, Lewis Cass, Henry Clay, Nathaniel Macon, Willie Mangum, and David S. Reid; elections, especially 1840, 1852, and the Democratic convention of 1860; and issues such as the Missouri Compromise, surplus revenue (1836), state legislative instruction of U.S. senators (1839), free suffrage, cabinet of Franklin Pierce, and whether the Secession Convention should be reconvened to legislate in 1862, with advice from Gov. Z. B. Vance, William A. Graham, Kenneth Rayner, Thomas Ruffin, Walter L. Steele, Henry T. Clark, Daniel W. Courts, Bedford Brown. Correspondents also include William Gaston, discussing religious requirements of officeholders (1833), Bedford Brown, James Buchanan, John W. Ellis, W. W. Holden, William R. King, R. M. Saunders, William Smith, and Richard Dobbs Spaight, Jr., with copies of correspondence between Daniel Webster and John Randolph of Roanoke (1829). There are personal letters from Nathaniel Macon; letters from Thomas Hart Benton about his sketch of Macon; and family letters to Edwards's great-nephew, Marmaduke J. Hawkins at University of Virginia (1870-1871). Business papers include receipts (1816-1821, 1849-1872); slave bills of sale (1820-1857); and estate papers and/or wills for Nathaniel, William, and Benjamin Edwards, father-in-law Marmaduke Norfleet, Sr. (Halifax Co., d. 1818), Marmaduke Norfleet, Jr. (d. 1830), Benjamin Williamson, and Nathaniel Macon (d. 1837), with guardian papers for Lucy S. Norfleet (Edwards), Weldon N. Edwards, and Edwin Yancey. Miscellaneous papers include printed speech by John Randolph of Roanoke, annotated by him (1828), and various election returns (1814-1852, 1861). Belonging to G. W. Johnston of Greenville are a postwar memorandum and recipe book and a volume containing autographs of prisoners at Ft. Warren, Boston Harbor, including North Carolinians captured at Ft. Hatteras, former U.S. naval officers from the South, and prominent citizens of Maryland (1861). Also daybook (1831-1834) of Robert Leckie, Washington, D.C., businessman concerned with real estate, brickyards, and canal building.
